The Legendary Tteokbokki Spot in Hongdae: That Neighborhood Tteokbokki [그동네떡볶이, 조폭도 울고가는 진짜 진짜 맛있는 홍대 분식집 [마포 / 홍대]]
Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) is an inseparable part of the Korean soul. For most Koreans, the love for this dish starts in elementary school, and those early flavors become a permanent part of our culinary DNA. Everyone has their own "best" version, which makes Tteokbokki a deceptively simple yet incredibly difficult dish to master.
It is at once the most universal and the most personal food in Korea. My journey to find the ultimate combination of Tteokbokki, fried snacks, and Gimbap led me to a small spot right in my own neighborhood near Hongdae: That Neighborhood Tteokbokki (Geu-dongne Tteokbokki).

Tucked away on the edge of the bustling Hongdae area, this tiny five-pyeong (about 16 sqm) shop always has a line snaking out the door. After finally stepping inside, I immediately understood why.
For me, Tteokbokki is more than just food; it’s a memory. It represents my first independent dining experience as a child, using my small allowance to choose my own meal without my parents' permission. Back then, 300 KRW got you a cup of Tteokbokki, and 500 KRW meant you could add a fried snack. That sense of freedom and achievement is permanently etched into the flavor of the spicy sauce.

The owners here are incredibly kind, and you can feel the heart they put into their food. Having a place like this in my neighborhood feels like a true blessing.

Local Insights (3 Key Highlights)
- The Clay Pot (Ttukbaegi) Magic: Serving Tteokbokki in a traditional clay pot keeps it steaming hot until the very last bite. This ensures the cheese stays melted and stretchy throughout your meal.
- Addictive 'Garlic Oil' Variation: For those tired of traditional soup-based Tteokbokki, their Garlic Oil version offers a sophisticated, savory umami hit that keeps locals coming back.
- Gourmet Gimbap Lineup: These aren't your average Gimbap rolls. With ingredients like Wasabi, Yurinki (Fried Chicken), and Pollack Roe, they transform a side dish into a main attraction.

The shop is small but meticulously organized. There are counter seats for solo eaters and small tables for two. It has that perfectly quirky, kitschy Hongdae vibe—including a sign that jokingly tells you not to leave any pickled radish behind!

In an era where some Tteokbokki sets cost over 20,000 KRW, finding a place where you can get a hearty portion for 4,500 KRW is refreshing. We went all out and ordered:
- Cheese Waterfall Rabokki (Tteokbokki + Ramen noodles)
- Wasabi Mayo Gimbap
- Garlic Oil Tteokbokki
- Assorted Fried Snacks
The Feast: Cheese Nukes and Garlic Thrills
The Cheese Waterfall Rabokki is more like a cheese nuclear bomb. I’m a massive fan of ramen noodles in spicy sauce, and this version was absolute perfection. The sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, enhanced by a mountain of high-quality cheese.

The clay pot is the secret hero here. It keeps the noodles and rice cakes at the perfect temperature until the very end.

Pairing the spicy noodles with the Wasabi Gimbap was a masterstroke. This isn't your standard roll; it has a distinct charcoal-grilled galbi flavor that is balanced out by the sharp kick of wasabi. It was so good I actually ordered an extra roll to take home!

The fried snacks (Twigim) deserve their own fan club. They are fried to such a perfect crisp that they would put many specialized chicken shops to shame. Even after cooling down, they stayed crunchy without any greasy aftertaste.

Finally, the signature Garlic Oil Tteokbokki. We are conditioned to think of Tteokbokki as a soup dish, so this dry, oil-based version is a revelation. It’s spicy, garlicky, and incredibly addictive. You can tell that every single dish here is prepared with genuine care.

Everything about this visit was delicious—the food, the witty banter of the owners, and the warm, friendly service. It’s the kind of place that makes a neighborhood feel like a community.

If you’re looking for an authentic, heartwarming, and wallet-friendly taste of Korea’s favorite street food, look no further than That Neighborhood Tteokbokki in Hongdae.
