They say that for a concept to truly work, it has to be "relentless." Only when a space is fully committed to its theme do people stop questioning and start feeling moved. Joseon Sidae in Hongdae is exactly that kind of place. Even as someone who appreciates a well-executed theme, I was blown away by the sheer scale and commitment of this "time-warp" tavern.
Stepping out of the neon-soaked streets of modern Hongdae and into the basement of Joseon Sidae feels like a literal leap back two hundred years. Ready for a time warp? Let’s go.

The entrance alone is staggering. It’s a perfect reconstruction of a Joseon-era Jumak (traditional tavern). In old Korea, a Jumak was more than just a pub; it was a rest stop, a restaurant, an inn, and a community hub where news was shared over steaming bowls of soup.

The attention to detail is immersive. From the wooden flogging boards (where you can take hilarious photos) to the authentic-looking furniture, the vibe is thick with history.

Why This Is a Must-Visit in Hongdae
- Photogenic Masterpiece: This isn't just a bar; it's a content factory. Every corner—the flogging board, the traditional sedan chairs, the jail cells—is a perfect backdrop for photos.
- Unexpected Quality: Theme bars often have a reputation for mediocre food. Joseon Sidae shatters that prejudice. The 'Chili Pepper Fritters' and 'Meat Sul-guk' are genuinely top-tier.
- Massive Scale: The venue is enormous (easily over 1,500 square meters). Even when the crowds pour in, it feels spacious and energetic.

The place is a magnet for the city’s "hip" crowd. It feels like everyone cool in Seoul has gathered here to celebrate. We asked for a quieter spot and were given a private room—it allowed us to enjoy the high-energy atmosphere while still having a focused conversation.

The menu is extensive—so much so that I was initially worried they were over-extending themselves. I thought, "With this many items, how could they all be good?" I was wrong.

The fritters and soup were the highlight. In my 20s, I rarely ate at bars because the snacks were always greasy or flavorless. But the modern "young" bars in Seoul have stepped up their game.

The Chili Pepper Fritters (Gochu-twigim) are the "kick" you need. They are massive, perfectly crispy, and the grease is completely drained, leaving only the savory filling and the snap of the pepper.

The pairing with habanero sauce and pickled onions is pure genius.

Then there's the Meat Sul-guk. Packed with tender meat and kalguksu noodles, the broth is incredibly deep and rich. It’s the ultimate "comfort food" that soothes your stomach while you drink. Truly, the tavern’s signature.

For drinks, you have to try the Makgeolli. We ordered the Strawberry Banana Makgeolli, and even though it’s a bit on the pricier side, it was worth it. It’s sweet, fruity, and has that perfect fermented tang.

I also tried the "Cloud" Makgeolli, a brand I hadn't seen before. I usually don't like overly sweet Makgeolli, but this one hit the sweet spot of flavor and refreshment. Highly recommended!

The interactive experience continues with random games on the ordering kiosks. It’s a great way to bond with your group and adds to the playful, competitive energy of the place.

Coming back to the 21st century after leaving Joseon Sidae felt like waking up from a vivid dream. It’s more than just a pub; it’s a journey. If you’re looking for a night filled with laughter, great photos, and surprisingly delicious food, Joseon Sidae is the place.
