The Secret Basement Izakaya in Yeonnam: Yeonnam Jip [연남짚, 수제 이자카야 요리를 제대로 하는 짚 [마포 / 연남]]
While wandering through the charming, maze-like alleys of Yeonnam-dong, I stumbled upon a facade that looked like a slice of the Korean Folk Village. At first glance, I thought I’d found a museum, but a closer look revealed it was Yeonnam Jip (Jip meaning straw/thatch in Korean).
The name itself is a clue to their specialty: Straw-smoked Tadaki. Using real rice straw to infuse dishes with a deep, smoky aroma is a traditional technique that they’ve mastered here. I walked in expecting that rustic smoke, but I ended up discovering something entirely different and equally mesmerizing.

Beyond the Signature: The "Sea Butter" Experience
I have a confession: I actually didn't order the straw-smoked dish. Why? Because I was completely captivated by the promise of their Kani Miso Pasta.
Kani Miso, or crab tombally, is often referred to as the "Foie Gras of the Sea" or "Sea Butter" because of its incredibly rich, umami-packed flavor profile. Unlike traditional Italian pasta, this is a masterpiece of Japanese-fusion dining, combining creamy textures with the deep brine of the ocean.

Just thinking about it makes my mouth water again. It was that good.

Why Locals Call It a "Date Night Cheat Code"
- Unique Straw-Smoked Aroma: While I opted for pasta, the gentle scent of straw smoke wafting through the air adds an earthy, sophisticated layer to the atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else.
- The Basement Magic: The semi-basement structure creates a natural intimacy. With low lighting and focused spotlights on the beautiful plating, it’s designed to make your dinner partner look their best.
- Flawless Fusion: Whether it’s Japanese, Chinese, or Italian-inspired, Yeonnam Jip puts a unique spin on every dish, ensuring that even the pickiest eaters find something to love.

Yeonnam Jip is the ultimate "date night" spot. It’s cozy without being stiff, and stylish without being pretentious. (I haven’t had a blind date here myself, but if I did, this is where I’d go!)

The interior features a mix of table seating and a wide counter (Dacci), giving it that authentic izakaya feel where you can watch the chefs at work.

The menu is so diverse that it was honestly a struggle to choose. To test if they were more than just a one-trick pony with their smoked dishes, we ordered the Kani Miso Pasta and the Yeonnam Jip Yurinki (Crispy Fried Chicken with hot and sour sauce). A mix of Japanese and Chinese influences!

We started with some great side dishes and a cold Kelly draft beer. The perfect "welcome" to the night.

Let’s talk about the Yurinki. It’s made with glutinous rice flour, making it incredibly chewy—what we call "Jwan-deuk" in Korea. The homemade sauce is the ultimate best friend to this crispy chicken. Honestly, this basement izakaya does Yurinki better than many specialized Chinese restaurants in the area.

Can you see that texture? It's pure culinary joy.

Downed another beer because the snacks were just calling for it!

And then, the star of the show: the Kani Miso Pasta. I was worried it might be too "fishy," but that concern vanished with the first bite. The thick, creamy sauce infused with crab tomball is insane. If you serve this to someone on a date, I guarantee a 100% success rate for a second meeting. Yeonnam Jip is basically a Cupid’s bridge.

The sauce is so good you’ll find yourself eating it with a spoon like a gourmet soup.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the chefs here on the next season of Culinary Class Wars. Sometimes it pays to try the non-signature items because it shows the true depth of a kitchen's skill.

Spring is just around the corner. It's the perfect time to visit a place like Yeonnam Jip with people you care about. Spend a beautiful night in this "folk village" inspired sanctuary. Spring comes quickly, and it leaves even faster—don't miss the chance to make some memories here.
