These days, yakitori houses are all the rage, but I've often found it hard to find a truly authentic and delicious one. That's until I discovered Gokko Yeonnam (고코 연남). This place is a game-changer, offering not just great yakitori, but also an incredible beef motsunabe (offal hotpot).

The Vibe: A Cozy Japanese Retreat

Just one alley away from the bustling Gyeongui Line Forest Road, Gokko Yeonnam has a grizzled, authentic feel. It's the kind of place where you can imagine a seasoned craftsman sitting at the counter. The interior is designed with a charming green and red color scheme, creating a cozy and sophisticated Japanese atmosphere. They even have separate, clean restrooms for men and women, guarded by cute Tom Hardy and Audrey Hepburn figures – a fun, space-geek detail!

Even on a weekday, the place was packed, a testament to its popularity. It's clear that Gokko Yeonnam is a beloved spot for Hongdae yakitori enthusiasts.

The Menu: Yakitori and Incredible Motsunabe

Gokko Yeonnam's yakitori is special. They offer the cheapest yakitori in Yeonnam-dong, but the flavor is superlative. You can watch the skewers being grilled by a true craftsman, ensuring perfect results every time. We ordered a variety of yakitori, including chicken thighs, fried eggs, and mooncakes.

But what truly sets Gokko Yeonnam apart is their Hanwoo Motsunabe (한우 모츠나베). This beef motsunabe is packed with ingredients and vegetables, and it's incredibly delicious. From now on, motsunabe will always be a young man! This motsunabe restaurant is a skewer shop with a twist, and the kick was definitely the mushrooms.

We paired our meal with two glasses of Kirin draft beer. The combination of the perfectly grilled skewers and the rich motsunabe was simply heavenly. As February comes to a close, I'm still thinking about the hot broth and warm skewers. Celebrate the end of winter at Gokko Yeonnam!
