In the heart of Digital Media City (DMC) in Mapo-gu, an area known more for its towering office buildings and broadcasting stations, lies a hidden gem that glows with a soft, purple hue. Kushinoa is not just another izakaya; it’s a sanctuary for those looking to capture both flavor and atmosphere in a single night.
I visited this spot after an exhausting day-trip for swimming. My body was weary, and my mind was craving that unmistakable crispness of a cold beer paired with something savory. Kushinoa turned out to be the perfect place to "crush" some yakitori and unwind.



The moment you approach Kushinoa, you feel as though you've been transported to a back alley in Tokyo. The entrance, guarded by a friendly Kaonashi (No-Face) from Spirited Away, sets a whimsical yet traditional tone. As a huge fan of Studio Ghibli, I couldn't help but snap a few photos with our silent host before heading inside.



A Paradise for Solo Travelers and "Hon-sul" Lovers
What truly sets Kushinoa apart in the Sangam area is its dedication to the solo diner. They even offer a specific Solo Tuna Set, which is a rare find. And we’re not talking about just any tuna—they specialize in Swordfish Belly (Mekajiki).
The swordfish belly is renowned among aficionados for its thick fat layers and firm texture. It’s a sophisticated cut that requires a skilled hand to prepare, and here, it’s served to perfection.

Even though it's an office-heavy area, the place was packed on a Saturday. That’s a testament to its quality—people are willing to travel here even on their days off just for the yakitori and the vibes.




The menu is focused but certain. Besides the skewers and oden, there are a variety of definitive Japanese dishes. It was actually hard to choose because I was so hungry! We ended up going heavy on the skewers—Yakitori 5-variety set plus an extra Negima (Chicken & Green Onion) because you can never have too much of a good thing.
And of course, they serve Okinawa Orion Draft Beer. I couldn't resist.


We started with some cabbage and crackers to pass the time while the skewers were being grilled over real charcoal.


Ordering the Negima was the best decision of the night. Every single skewer was bursting with juice and rich flavor. I've been to the most famous yakitori spots in Yeonnam, Sangsu, and Hapjeong, but none of them felt as moist and tender as the ones here at Kushinoa.


You might think skewers aren't filling, but these are proper, substantial snacks that serve as a real meal when you have a variety.

For high-quality snacks, beer and sawa are mandatory. The Orion beer was so good I finished it before the tuna even arrived!


And then, the Swordfish Belly arrived.

It was radiant. Taking a piece, dipping it in salt oil, and wrapping it in seaweed is simply the peak of culinary bliss.

The combination of hot skewers and cold, fatty tuna is surprisingly harmonious. It’s a multi-textural experience that keeps your palate engaged.

I wondered if it was okay to eat this grandly in an izakaya. At Kushinoa, it was not only possible but encouraged. Looking back, it was also incredibly good value for the quality provided.
